One of the main reasons that the human race has survived to dominate the Earth is that the human body has a wonderful pain response mechanism which lets us know that something is wrong, so that we can take the measures necessary to fix it. When there is a problem, our bodies instantly produce the hormones which cause pain and inflammation, and will continue to produce them until the problem is addressed, unless we interfere with the pain response. But now that we are living longer than ever, our bodies sometimes develop age related conditions which cannot be cured, and pain medication allows us to tolerate them much more easily.
